Open Question: My Parents Don’t Want Me to Visit My Boyfriend, Am I Making the Right Decision?
I’m in a long distance relationship with my boyfriend of almost year, I’m in Pennsylvania and he’s in South Carolina. I understand that having a long distance relationship entails spending extended periods apart from each other, but I thought it would be a nice surprise to visit him for a weekend.
I assumed that my parents would be fine with this decision, but when I mentioned that I was planning on buying a ticket they told me that they felt the visit wasn’t a good idea. Their reasons included the state of the economy, academics, and the fact that I’m a freshman.
I’m well aware that no one’s financial situation is the most comforting place to be, but I feel that I have enough money saved up in my bank account from my job last year and over the summer to make this purchase. On the subject of academics, I spend a great deal of time studying, I wouldn’t miss any classes for this trip, and have no large academic commitments the following week.
I know that I probably won’t be able to change their minds and I know that ultimately I’m going to buy this ticket, but I feel awful making them so disappointed in me. They told me that by making this decision I’m basically showing them that I don’t appreciate anything they do for me. I know that I have had and do have it pretty easy, I understand that they’re making a huge financial commitment by paying for my undergrad education right now. I’m just wondering if I really am being completely immature about this situation. Is it wrong for me to think that this is my decision to make? And is there anything I can do to make sure this doesn’t completely ruin our relationship?

Open Question: Tax offset by student loans?
I defaulted on my student loans and was recently contacted by a company called Windham Professionals that now has my account. I have started making on time payments with them, but I recently just found out my entire tax refund is being offset to ed fund.
I know it was my fault for defaulting to begin with, but is there anyway to stop this from happening by working with Windham (has anyone dealt with them before?) since I have agreed to repay the debt now? I was really trying to start this year off by taking care of financial debts, and I was planning on using the refund for such. Also, I don’t know if they take personal situations into consideration, my mother is mentally disabled and lives with me, and it’s devastating to not receive the refund because it helps with her as well.
Any advice is really appreciative, I haven’t been able to contact Windham b/c they’re not open yet, I’m just completely crushed by learning about the offset this morning. Thanks….
