M&A Outlook 2009: Blue Wolf’s Blumenthal on regulation

At The Deal’s M&A Outlook 2009 conference Adam Blumenthal, a portfolio manager at Blue Wolf Capital Management said he believes that the government has to question everything as it alters the regulatory structure of financial institutions because it is reacting to the economic crisis. “We can expect a level of volatility of government reactions that mirrors the volatility in the financial markets,” he said.

Resolved Question: I’d like to know peoples’ opinion about…?
the bailout. I was going back and forth with one of these users [back when I was in the politics/elections section] about the difference between a bailout [I called it] and a loan [she called it] to the auto industry. To me, a loan you pay back, a bailout…you don’t, it’s issued to help a company thrive again [i.e., the financial institutions].

With Chrysler filing bankrupt and GM in the beginning stages of bankruptcy…

Did anyone else see this coming? That it was an astronomical mistake to throw that money into sinking ships? It’s basic! People can’t get loans, people can’t buy cars, cars are the auto industries’ biggest commodity…auto industry goes kaput.

Very basic stuff, and the government is blowing sunshine up our @sses, and the worst is still to come…

Anyone else see it coming? What’s your thought?
Know It All: How can they pay it back in they’re not selling cars? People aren’t able to get financed. I don’t know very many people [zero] that can walk into a dealership and pay cash for a brand new car.
Eoghan: Lol…yea, pretty close to that, at least people of “tax paying” age. They coulda given that to me and I’d a got the economy rolling again.
Rio: Thanks. The biggest problem with the auto industry is the credit industry.

I also agree with the “green” and they should have done that right after we were hit on 9/11…when the gas prices started to soar.
Well said Oracle and Tim. That’s exactly what I said when I was hanging out in the politics/elections Y!A.
tabahwa: I don’t ask in politics/elections because it’d probably get deleted just like everything else I said against our current administration.

All we’re doing is prolonging the inevitable. PEOPLE CAN’T GET LOANS, ERGO CAN’T BUY CARS. Sorry…I think that’s about the 4th time I’ve mentioned that in my question.

Resolved Question: What happens if I fail to omit a previously attended university on a college application?
I flunked out of the first university I attended. But I went to a community college and got a two year liberal arts degree and did pretty well. However, that one year at the university I flunked out of lowers my GPA below the minimum requirements for admission to the university I want to attend.

Also, I DID NOT receive any financial aid to attend the first university I attended. So if I omit having ever attended that university, will the university I’m applying to ever find out? Will they check? My grades at the first institution were so bad that it’s bogging me down, and I’ve been denied admission to two universities already because of it. What can I do?

Open Question: Will federal student loans pay for two different schools?
I want to go to the college that I have been going to for a year now, I like it there and it is a very affordable and equipped institution. The problem is that I want to take chemistry at a different school so that I can bypass an extra math class. If I need to pay out of pocket, I will, I just want to know so that I don’t get waste time with financial aid at the other school if I won’t qualify.
